We envision a network of people and organizations engaged in reciprocal and responsive knowledge-sharing that strengthens our collective ability to sustain biodiversity in BC.

The BCBN will:
Engage and communicate
With practitioners across the province who contribute to and use biodiversity monitoring data. This includes community organizations, academics, government agencies, Indigenous communities and non-profit and private sector organizations.
Meaningfully engage with Indigenous communities
To ensure proper respect and care for Indigenous data, governance, local experiences, and synthesis needs. Across all activities, an Indigenous advisory council will offer insight into Indigenous perspectives, especially on operational infrastructure and considerations to support Indigenous data sovereignty, capacity enhancement, and attention to addressing and preventing harm.
Encourage capacity sharing and monitoring standards in BC.
The BCBN will curate and share protocols and analytical workflows for biodiversity monitoring and analysis, making it easy for new groups to generate results that can be integrated with ongoing efforts. The BC BN will create space for communities-of-practice to collectively decide on standards that describe how information can be best collected and shared to reach common goals, and provide training on data use, access, analyses, and standards.
Harmonize and analyze data
The BCBN will develop methods to make data more comparable, even when they come from different sources (e.g. camera traps, bird counts, eDNA), spatial or temporal resolutions, and methods. This step will add value and balance to our biodiversity knowledge, providing more robust indicators that fully take into account available data and effort.
Create a BC biodiversity dashboard
The BCBN will create an online dashboard to enable sharing, finding and downloading of diverse types of biodiversity and environmental data, summaries, and indicators, whether for regional-scale analyses or local decision-making. We will integrate functionality that supports different levels of Indigenous data sovereignty.
Report on biodiversity status and trends
Use the Dashboard to support open and advanced biodiversity inquiry and analytical tools. Provide assessments, visualizations and indicators.
